Toine Heijmans est né le 1er février 1969 à Nimègue au Pays-Bas. Il a travaillé pour des quotidiens locaux pendant ses études à l’université de sa ville. Il s’installe à Amsterdam en 1995 où il rejoint la rédaction du journal De Volkskrant dans lequel il montre un fort intérêt pour les minorités et demandeurs d’asile. Entre 1998 et 2007, date à laquelle il devient reporter, il réalise trois reportages documentaires :

,
Die Asielmachine
et
Respect ! .Son premier roman
En Mer
est publié en 2011 et obtient le prix Médicis étranger 2013 en France. Il a été traduit en plusieurs langues et a également été adapté en film au Pays-Bas par Marinus Groothof sous le titre
Op zee
.
Toine Heijmans was born on 1 February 1969 in Nijmegen in the Netherlands. He worked for local newspapers during his studies at the university of his city. He moved to Amsterdam in 1995 and he joined the editing team ofr De Volkskrant, a newspaper. he is interestiçng in minorities and asylum seekers. Between 1998 and 2007, when he became a reporter, he directed three documentary stories: La Vie Vinex Die Asielmachine and Respect!. His first novel, At Sea, was published in 2011 and obtains the Médicis étranger award in 2013 in France. It has been translated into several languages and has also been adapted into a film by Marinus Groothof, Op zee.
